
Why we put our bathroom lamps through the “steam torture test”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, wild temperature swings, and water vapor getting into every tiny crack. If a heating lamp isn’t built for that specific chaos, the quartz tube just gives up or the electrical bits start to rust. That’s why we put our units through “damp-heat aging.” It sounds fancy, but it’s basically us trying to break the lamp before it ever reaches your house.
The problem with moisture
Here is the thing about humidity: it loves to sneak in. Water vapor finds its way into the housing and settles right on the terminals. Then comes the oxidation. Once those contacts get rusty, you get resistance. Resistance leads to hotspots. And hotspots? Those lead to melted wires or a lamp that just stops working. To stop that from happening, we throw our lamps into a chamber where the humidity hits 95% and the temperature bounces around. We compress years of steamy showers into a few weeks. We’re looking for any leak, any crack, or any sign that the insulation is giving up.
Keeping the glass intact
We use a specific kind of quartz because it can handle the shock of going from a freezing cold bathroom to 500°C in a heartbeat. But there’s a catch. The seal where the wires enter the tube is usually the weakest point. If that seal fails, the halogen gas leaks out. Once that gas is gone, the filament evaporates, and—pop—your lamp is dead. Our tests make sure that seal is bulletproof. We check for any cloudiness on the glass and make sure the electrical parts stay insulated, even when they’re practically soaking.
The trade-off
To make a lamp this resistant to moisture, we have to use thicker sealing compounds and special coatings. Now, does this change the heat a little bit? Maybe. You might get a tiny shift in how the infrared light is emitted. But honestly, we’d rather lose a theoretical 1% of initial heat than have your lamp burn out after six months. We’re betting on stability. Because at the end of the day, a lamp that’s slightly less “perfect” but actually works for years is the one you want in your bathroom.
