
More Than Just a Heater: Keeping Your Bathroom Dry with Infrared
Most people think of recessed ceiling heaters as a way to stop the shivers when you step out of the shower. But there’s a lot more going on under the hood. We actually build these things to tackle a much nastier problem: moisture. The secret is the shortwave infrared (SWIR) emitter. Instead of just warming up the air—which is what your standard space heater does—this stuff goes straight for the surfaces.
Getting Rid of the Damp
We’ve all seen it. That stagnant, damp air where mold just loves to hang out. Shortwave emitters work differently because they hit a higher frequency. They don’t just make your skin feel warm; they actually push moisture out of the porous stuff in your bathroom, like your grout and sealant. When you flip the switch, the lamp creates a quick burst of heat right where it’s needed. Water on the surfaces evaporates fast. This basically does the heavy lifting for your exhaust fan. It turns liquid droplets into vapor, making it way easier for the fan to suck everything out of the room.
The Gear (And a Warning About Your Wiring)
We use quartz halogen tubes in most of our recessed units. Why? Because they’re fast. Like, “instant heat” fast. You aren’t waiting around for a coil to warm up; you feel it in seconds. We wrap these in aluminum reflectors to beam that energy straight down. It keeps the heat away from your ceiling joists and puts it exactly where you want it: on the floor and walls. **One heads-up, though.**These lamps pull a lot of power. If you’re putting a few of these in one area, check your wiring. You don’t want to be standing in a towel in the dark because you tripped a breaker.
Keeping Things Running
Here is the tricky part: quartz glass is a bit finicky. If you get a fingerprint or a smudge of soap scum on the tube, it creates a “hot spot.” That spot stresses the glass and, eventually, the lamp will just burn out. It’s a pain, but a quick wipe-down during your regular cleaning fixes it. These lamps aren’t forever. You’ll get about 5,000 to 10,000 hours out of them. Just plan on popping in a replacement every few years and you’re good to go.
